Chapter 20

Samantha

One Year Earlier

I’ve been so busy lately with swimming that I hardly have time to spend with Garrett anymore. It’s been a constant loop of school, practice, home, and repeat. I only see him in school during the day and sometimes on Saturday, but it’s not the same. I miss him. I feel like we’re drifting apart. I’ve expressed my concerns with him. Of course, he says that we are fine. I just have to get through two more weeks of school. Then maybe we can spend more time together.

Garrett wasn’t in our last class. I wonder where he was as I put my things away. I hear him coming down the hall before I see him. The sound of his voice always brings a smile to my face. Just as I close my locker, he swings me around and dips me.

“Hey, babe. I missed you.” His grip loosens around my back, and his hands rest on my waist.

“I missed you too.”

“It’s my favorite part of the day.”

“Yeah, I know. It’s lunchtime. Unfortunately, I have to go to the library during my break. So, I have to eat fast.”

“We better get going then.” He throws his arm around my shoulder and guides me down the hall.

“Why weren’t you in class today?” I ask hesitantly.

“Coach excused us all from class for a special meeting about next season.”

I can’t help but notice the funny looks as we walk. The popular girls giggle and whisper as we pass. It’s like everyone knows a secret that I don’t. I glance at Garrett to see if it’s just me or if he notices too.

“Are you alright, babe?”

“Am I missing something? Do you feel everyone’s eyes on us, or is it just me?”

“It’s just you,” he answers quickly. “These people could care less what we do. You’re just paranoid. How are things with the swim team?” He changes the subject.

I still feel uneasy about the stares, but I’ll let it go for now. “Things are good. Are you coming to my swim meet on Saturday? You haven’t made it to one yet.”

“You know I have to work, babe. I wish I could be there.”

Garrett has been working a lot lately. His workdays seem to always fall on the same days as my swim meets. He hasn’t been much support in that area. Dad and Lacy have been to all of them. Most days, when I have practice, Garrett is off from work. Our schedules are on opposite sides of the spectrum.

“I understand. I wish you could come check out my moves. I’m like a mermaid when I’m in the water.”

“You do know that the water is not the only place you can show me your moves, right?” he asks jokingly.

I swat his arm playfully. “Leave it to you to corrupt something innocent. That mouth of yours is going to get you in trouble one day.”

We grab our trays and find a seat. Garrett leans over to whisper in my ear. The warmth from his breath stimulates my inner ear.
